Cairo exploded in anger today.

I thought something like this might happen -- it's why I kept the children home with me. As the American University did not cancel classes (as everyone thought they might), Rondo went in to work. Duty calls. I sat here jittery all day, trying to play games with the children to keep them occupied, to keep my mind occupied. Tried again and again to check on news, to see if Rondo was safe.

He did call me at 1:00, but I wonder if that made things worse rather than better. Though his words were "I'm ok, everything's all right, don't worry," his voice told a different story, he was obviously stressed. Stressed, yet nothing but soothing words -- something's wrong.

He kept on teaching, though. The university itself was surrounded by police and soliders, there was no way the demonstrations would get inside the university. Besides, they were much more interested in getting to the U.S. Embassy, a couple of blocks away, and kept pushing in that direction. And Rondo had heard that some of the students from AUC who joined the protests ended up bloodied by the police; he wanted his students to stay inside learning logic, they were safer there.

The worst part about him was journeying home -- he had to walk towards the center of the demonstration, and in fact, go right up next to it, to get to the metro line home. I don't know if I would have done it, personally -- I think I would have walked the other way and found a cab. All those people, so angry, so mad -- and if they're talking about attacking U.S. interests, what's to stop them from attacking U.S. citizens?

I was so relieved when he came home safely. I don't think we'll be leaving the house for a couple of days. And AUC has already started to close things down for the weekend.

Re: Scary

Thanks for the hugs, Leslie! I just hope things settle down soon -- I love this place. I want to see it back as its normal self. :)

You're braver than me. I'd shitting my drawers with anxiety if I were anywhere in that part of the world right now.

I don't know how much is brave and how much is stupid. But I had my opportunity to get out last week; I assessed the chance of personal harm (relatively low; if I were in Jordan, I'd be bookin' the other way as fast as an airplane could take me), and decided to ride out the storm.

I guess I stayed because I'm trying to build a home here, not a vacation bungalow -- I feel like I have more at stake here. And where would I go? I don't have a home in the states. All five of us would have a hard time staying in someone's guest room indefinitely, and we can't afford a hotel. I live here, for better or for worse. And so much of it has been better, I guess we can take the lumps too (given what I said earlier about personal danger being relatively low).

If you need to come stateside because things get worse, let me know. Things might get pretty tight in the house, but I think Paula and I could find room for you and yours. Don't be staying there just because you've no other place to go. OK?

Thanks, Bill. That's extremely generous of you. I'll remember that.

I will echo Bill's offer. We have room, we have food, we can find a way. If you need to get out fast, know that you can call me from San Francisco or San Jose airport and you'll have a bed that night.

While I'm writing - do you have a way to read LJ from home? Will you be cut off from electronic communication until you venture to the library?

Nother question. How is Widad doing? I could send bunches of stuff but I don't know a) how to send it b) what she needs.

Thanks, Ceej!

Yeah, I can LJ from home, we fixed our computer problems. As long as the dial-up connection holds, I'm fine.

Widad's doing pretty good, thanks for asking! Today is Mother's Day here, and she expects most of her presents to be clothes to replace those lost in the fire. :)

She was a little unsteady coming here yesterday, I think -- wasn't sure my opinion of all this. But we sat down and talked, and agreed that Saddam AND Bush were bad news, and war was a horrible thing, and Clinton had nice hair. :)

Oh good, she'll have clothes! What else is she missing? What about clothes for her kids?

Ick, I can only imagine how I'd feel if I were her - an Arab going to work for an American, when there's a war like this on. Yikes. She's a brave lady. I'm glad you talked. And I'm very amused by the "Clinton had nice hair" part! :-)

Yeah, I liked that too. She was also a fan of Reagan -- I wonder if that had anything to do with HIS hair?

if you end up stateside, my dad's house is currently vacant and un-sold. no furniture, but it's available. if by chance it actually sells, y'all could stay here with Sam and i'd bunk with the folks... i wouldn't subject you to them!!

Thanks, Cyd. (Both for the offer of housing, and for protecting me from the folks).

I'm so sorry that you're now in a position of being somewhat in the middle - it must be quite scary, and I will be praying that you are kept safe.

Thanks, Kris. I'm sure we'll be fine. Just learning a bit more about the world than we bargained for. We're shaken, but not stirred. ;)

I appreciate the prayers.

Lisa, please keep yourselves safe. If you need to get out quickly, you are always welcome here -- any time day or night. Buffalo Niagara International AIrport. The house is a bit crowded, but I have a big old barn that is habitable in the summer and early fall months (in fact, Lindsay likes to spend time out there -- your boys would love it).

You guys are in my thoughts...
